4 Secrets to Finding the Right Beginner Yoga Class

4 Secrets to Finding the Right Beginner Yoga Class

I love Yoga, and it’s something I would absolutely recommend to anyone thinking of trying it. But when you’re new to yoga, it can be daunting to figure out what to expect on your first day in a beginner yoga class. Many people aren’t sure what to look for in a class. Here are four secrets to help you find the right beginner yoga class for you.

Secret Number One: Decide What You Want to Achieve Before Choosing a Style

The reasons for taking up yoga are as varied as the people in the classes. Generally, people seek one of three things: physical health, mental health, or spiritual health. All three are important and attainable through yoga. Knowing your goal will help you find a class and style that suits you. Research online, at the library, or ask experienced yogis for recommendations.

Set specific goals for yourself. Yoga instructors are usually very open to discussing your goals and can help you determine if they are realistic or if another style might be better suited to your needs.

Secret Number Two: Join a Drop-In Class

Drop-in classes, or pay-as-you-go classes, are a great way to get a feel for yoga. These classes often have a regular turnover of students, which keeps the sessions at a relatively mild level and exposes you to various aspects of yoga.

The advantage of drop-in classes is that you’re not committed to an expensive series of sessions. You can try out yoga and see what styles interest you. You’ll also quickly learn if your initial goals are realistic or if you need to adjust them.

Once you have an idea of what suits you best, you can choose a series of classes that build on each other week by week. However, missing a class in a series can leave you feeling behind.

Secret Number Three: Ensure You Are Being Taught by a Qualified Instructor

Despite its low intensity and many physical benefits, yoga can still result in injuries. This often happens when students push themselves too quickly or when instructors lack proper training or fail to understand their students’ individual levels (large classes can sometimes contribute to this).

Don’t hesitate to ask your potential instructor about their qualifications and background. Some instructors have only a brief training course in “gym yoga,” which can be insufficient. Traditionally, a student would train for many years under a guru before teaching even the simplest yoga techniques.

The Yoga Alliance in the United States maintains a register of instructors who have completed appropriate training, typically meaning at least 200 hours of instruction. This is a good benchmark to ensure your instructor has a substantial yoga education.

Secret Number Four: Be Aware of Hidden Costs

An unpleasant surprise can be discovering additional expenses when you show up for your first class. Some studios require you to have your own mat, special straps, or other props. Some classes use a specific book that you need to purchase, and others have a dress code, which can range from specific colors to specific articles of clothing. Knowing these requirements ahead of time can prevent any off-putting surprises.

By considering these four secrets, you’ll be better prepared to find a beginner yoga class that meets your needs and helps you achieve your goals. Enjoy your journey into yoga!

If you’ve been thinking about giving yoga a try, I really would highly recommend it. It’s something that really helps me get through the week.
