Are you in love or are you obsessed?

Are you in love or are you obsessed?

Have you ever been with a guy, and he’s all you can think about? Girl, you aren’t alone. I get it. I think all of us have it at one time or another. But the question you need to be asking yourself is, are you really in love with him, or are you obsessed with him? There is a difference.

It can be challenging to discern between genuine love and an unhealthy obsession. While love is nurturing and reciprocal, obsession can be consuming and destructive. Understanding the difference is crucial to maintaining mental health and fostering healthy relationships.

Here are some telltale signs that you may be more obsessed than in love:

One major red flag is neglecting your responsibilities in the hopes of encountering the person you’re fixated on. This could mean missing work, school, or other important commitments simply because he might call or show up. Sacrificing your obligations for a mere chance of meeting someone indicates a serious problem. Over time, this behavior can lead to regret, especially if the relationship doesn’t last and you’re left with missed opportunities and unfulfilled responsibilities.

Another sign of obsession is foregoing activities you enjoy to be available if the object of your obsession decides to contact you. This includes skipping hobbies, events, or social gatherings in anticipation of a possible interaction. It’s one thing to adjust your schedule for a significant other in a committed relationship; it’s another to put your life on hold for someone who hasn’t shown a reciprocal level of commitment. This behavior not only limits your experiences but also places undue importance on someone who hasn’t earned it.

When obsession takes over, friendships often suffer. You may start to ignore your friends, cancel plans, or become less available to them in favor of being “on call” for the person you’re fixated on. This neglect can drive a wedge between you and your friends, as they realize you prioritize someone who may not even reciprocate your feelings over long-standing relationships. Friendships are vital for emotional support and personal growth, and neglecting them for a one-sided infatuation can leave you isolated.

If any of these behaviors resonate with you, it’s essential to take a step back and evaluate how deeply you’ve fallen into this unhealthy pattern. Obsession isn’t just about intense feelings; it’s about losing a sense of self and neglecting your well-being for the sake of another. Here are some steps to help overcome obsession and move toward healthier relationships:

  1. Acknowledge the Problem: Recognizing that your feelings might be more obsessive than loving is the first step. Denial will only deepen the issue.
  2. Seek Professional Help: Therapists can provide strategies to manage obsessive behaviors and help you understand the underlying causes.
  3. Re-engage with Your Life: Start participating in activities you love and reconnect with friends. This will help restore balance and reduce the fixation on one person.
  4. Set Boundaries: Create boundaries for yourself to avoid falling back into obsessive habits. This might include limiting how often you check your phone for messages or how frequently you think about the person.

Healthy relationships are built on mutual respect and balanced give-and-take. If you find yourself sacrificing your responsibilities, interests, and friendships for someone who hasn’t shown they value you equally, it’s time to reassess your situation. Obsession can ruin your life if left unchecked, but by taking steps to address it, you can open the door to genuine, reciprocal love that enhances your life rather than detracting from it. Remember, you deserve a relationship where both partners contribute equally and support each other’s growth.
