Maybe Not Book Summary

Warren wakes up and finds a strange woman in his bathroom who starts to yell at him until he’s out of the door again. Confused, he asks his friend Brennan who it is, and he tells him that this is Bridgette, Warren’s and Ridge’s new roommate. When Warren asks why they would have a new roommate, he is informed that since he is not the one to pay rent for their apartment, he is also not the one to choose if someone will stay there or not.

The first thing Warren asks Brennan is if he and this Bridgette girl are together since he was the one who brought her into the apartment. Brennan says that she is just a friend, but Warren pushes some more, wanting to be sure Bridgette is not someone else’s because he knows himself well and knows that living with a beautiful girl like that might make him have some feelings for her eventually. Brennan takes him somewhere so they can talk alone without Ridge and tells him that there is a big chance for Bridgette to be Brennan’s and Ridge’s sister from the same father, but they don’t want to say anything to Ridge before they are completely sure.

Warren welcomes Bridgette as the new roommate by placing plastic cups of water all over her bedroom floor as an ultimate prank. When he doesn’t hear her get home after work or react in any way to that prank, Warren falls asleep disappointed, but he wakes up when Bridgette knocks on his door to tell him it isn’t funny. When she leaves, and Warren wants to get out of bed, his whole bed gets wet from a bucket full of water that was set above him, and he falls on the floor, which is also full of water cups.

The next day he overhears Bridgette talking to her friend on the phone when the other girl says to Bridgette that she needs to be patient and stay with the guys until she can find a better job, and she jokes that the other option is for her return to in the porn industry.

Laughing, Bridgette clarifies that it was only one adult movie that she was filmed in and that it was for just a couple of minutes as a guest (not participating). When she turns around and sees that Warren is there, Bridgette hangs up the phone not sure how much he heard, and tells him to take her to work with his car.

On the way there, Warren thinks why she is being such a bitch to everyone and tries to make conversation, to which she replies ironic again. But after that, she actually answers his question, and he takes it as her best way to show she is sorry for her behavior. After he leaves her at work, she tells him (again, she doesn’t ask; she just informs him) that he needs to pick her up after her shift.

A few days later, Warren walks into Bridgette in the bathroom again, just like the day they met, but this time, he doesn’t get out when she starts yelling at him. Instead, he starts brushing his teeth, and she follows, doing the same as they both try to distract the other one. Warren realizes that he already has some kind of feelings for her, but he wants to resist her and thinks of a “funny” prank to pretend he is going to kiss her until the very last minute before he grabs something from behind her and pulls away leaving her obviously as sexually frustrated as he is.

Later when Bridgette goes to study in the living room, she finds Warren still looking out for her porn movie and asks him to keep the volume low. Everything between them is intense, and they end up kissing.

Warren and Bridgette spend three days after their kiss without talking to each other, but when they start fighting again over nothing important, as always, they end up in his bed. Bridgette tells Warren that she makes the calls, and they have sex the way she wants.

Once they are finished, she leaves for her room, but Warren follows him because he is not sure she is serious when she tells him she doesn’t want him to continue so she can get the pleasure, too. After establishing that this is how Bridgette is always in bed, Warren tells her to shut up and let him please her for once, and finally, she does before she kicks him out of her room again.

The next night, Bridgette shows up on Warren’s door right at the moment he is going to knock on hers, and they spend the night together again. After that, they do it more and more often for the next three weeks, during which they spend the nights having sex, and during the days, they have zero interaction.

There is a new roommate in the apartment – Sydney, who appears to be one of Ridge’s friends, and once Bridgette sees her near Warren, she immediately starts getting jealous, but she doesn’t want to show it. The next day, she brings someone home, a guy who took her out on a date. Warren gets jealous and irritated by that, but he is not afraid to show it by pranking the guy with some hemorrhoid cream and wart remover in the bathroom that he didn’t know Bridgette and Warren shared.

They have a fight later when she discovers why her date left so fast, but during the fight, they both show each other that they did what they did because of jealousy. Warren asks her why she is so scared of letting herself admit that she is falling in love with him, and then she tells him that she has never been loved or felt in love with someone. They end up having sex again, but after that night, their sex habits change into something slower and full of passion.

Warren asks Bridgette to accompany him when he has to visit his sister. On the way there, they have a whole fight over… Bridgette refuses to hold his hand, but when she realizes that she is the one who actually throws such a big fit over holding hands, she silently apologizes, placing her hand in his until they reach their destination.

Once there, Warren tells Bridgette that she can stay in the car if she wants to, but she decides to follow him inside and meet his sister and nephews. Warren follows his sister upstairs for a while because his little nephew is crying, leaving Bridgette with the oldest toddler in the kitchen. She feels like she doesn’t know how to handle it, but after all, they have some fun. When Warren is done, he and Bridgette leave, and on their way back home, they joke about how they should kidnap a child or even his nephew instead of having a baby on their own.

The next day, Bridgette finds Warren hanging out with Sydney again, and she makes a scene still thinking that Sydney is deaf like Ridge. Warren had known all this time that Sydney was not deaf but hadn’t told Bridgette because it was the ultimate prank he could think of.

On this day, though, Bridgette’s accusations of Sydney having feelings for Warren and following him around make Sydney reach her limits and start talking – yelling – in front of Bridgette, letting her know that she is not deaf, she has absolutely no feelings for Warren, and that she needs to stop being such a bitch.

Bridgette feels betrayed when she realizes Warren had known all along about Sydney’s perfect hearing and is still letting her talk in front of her. But Sydney follows her into her room and tries to apologize for her sharp behavior, which is out of nowhere. She also tells Bridgette that even if she doesn’t believe it, Warren is actually falling in love with her, and he admitted it when he was drunk a couple of nights ago.

Bridgette goes out to Warren again, and even though he expects her to hit him, she confesses that she is also falling in love with him. After clarifying that this is it and they are together, they decide to move in together, bringing Bridgette’s bed into his room.

Maybe Not by Colleen Hoover

When Warren has the opportunity to live with a female roommate, he instantly agrees. It could be an exciting change.

Or maybe not.

Especially when that roommate is the cold and seemingly calculating Bridgette. Tensions run high and tempers flare as the two can hardly stand to be in the same room together. But Warren has a theory about Bridgette: anyone who can hate with that much passion should also have the capability to love with that much passion. And he wants to be the one to test this theory.

Will Bridgette find it in herself to warm her heart to Warren and finally learn to love?

Maybe not.
